The six-lane Oceanside Community Track at Ballenas Secondary is set to officially open on Sept. 12.
An opening ceremony is scheduled at 2 p.m. that will have all the longtime proponents of the project, officials from City of Parksville, Town of Qualicum Beach, the Regional District of Nanaimo, Qualicum School District, as well as the many individuals and businesses that made donations in making this dream a reality.
It has been more than 20 years since the drive to replace the dilapidated track was initiated. The Oceanside Track Steering Committee, led by Rudy Terpstra, is excited to finally see the new six-lane, all-weather track completed.
Among the many guests expected to be at the opening that will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony are Randy and Kim Longmuir, former track coaches who led the campaign more than two decades ago to get a proper track built in the area.
An official first lap will include everyone to celebrate the creation of the new recreational facility.
The public is invited to take part in the opening of the track.
